Yoga is the science of right living and as such is intended to be incoporated in daily life. It works on all aspects of the person; the physical, vital, mental, emotional, psychological and spritual.

INTRODUCTION:

Present day life is becoming more mechanical with stressful lifestyle, though there is improvement in the standard of living in social, economical and cultural aspects. As they are having great bearing in the causation of organic diseases in man, since the social aspects of life are essential for peace of mind and self-satisfaction is an accepted fact along with economical status resulting in literacy, good environment with hygiene, good shelter, which also improves the mental and physical health. With all these comforts the diseases are increasing in number, especially stress and strain are the today’s major problems.In this 21st century, the stress disorders or the psychosomatic diseases, such as hypertension, hyperacidity, heart diseases, diabetes etc, challenge the human existence. These diseases are main problems of the present era. Once the person is diseased he needs to be on lifelong medication, even with the medications he cannot lead a comfortable life.

RELEVANCE OF YOGA IN TODAY’S LIFE: With increasing struggle for existence the human life is affected by the impacts of stress and strain. Inspite of all scientific advancement we are becoming the victims of systemic diseases. These diseases make us depend on drugs as long as we live. But still the results are poor to meet the physical as well as spiritual health. To attain complete harmony, as we need an alternate means to combat the havocs played by anxiety.

We today have realized that the answer to these problems lies in Yoga.

– Makes self-confidence
– Increases concentration & memory.
– Gives inner peace and happiness.

Hence it is required for all to set a time to practice yoga to lead a healthy and peaceful life.

We can attain harmonious development of our body, mind, intellect and soul, by the practice of yoga because it is an exact science where we can develop our will power and control over the mind. Dhyana the yogic technique which has recently become popular all over the world and meditation can be used for prevention of psychological and psychosomatic disorders like depression, anxiety, tensions and other many mental disorders etc.

Our happiness depends on our mind and it depends on our body. Without physical health we can’t be completely happy and without mental happiness, we can’t be completely healthy. Though yoga can be practiced in all age groups, some techniques are more suited and desirable for specific age groups.

It is desirable that older people should avoid asanas, which involve excessive stretching such as Halasana, Shirshasana, Dhanurasana etc.

Meditation & relaxation are necessary for all irrespective of age.

One should practice yoga according to need.
